How to earn 70 SEUs for FREE to become CSP (Certified Scrum Professional) in shortest possible time

Here is details about free SEUs for CSP (Certified Scrum Professional)

Category ‘A’ – Category A has a maximum limit of 45 SEUs, you can earn these by attending Scrum Alliance events. These events can be Scrum Global Gathering, Regional Gathering, Scrum Alliance Sponsored event and User Group event.

Scrum Bangalore organize full day event in Bangalore every quarter and now have started in Gurgaon, Discuss Agile regularly organize meetup in all cities, PlayScrum also organize meetup in Pune, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Basically, if you plan well then you can earn 20-30 SEUs in 3 months easily. I believe that’s good enough for this category.

Category ‘B’ – You can earn unlimited SEUs in this Category. But those will be paid. In any case, you need at least on Certification from this category to apply for CSP. Certified Scrum Master (CSM) gives you 16 SEUs, Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) gives you 16 as well and Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) gives you 40. Ideally if you complete all these 3 roles based certifications then you get 56 from this category itself and don’t need anything else. I strongly suggest everyone to attend all 3 workshops before becoming CSP. Because you are planning for next level so it does matter that you know every roles and respective responsibilities in details.

But I said free SEUs for CSP so assuming you will only have 16 SEUs from this category either for CSM/CSPO or CSD.

Category ‘C’ – You can claim 15 SEUs under Category C by attending any agile/scrum program such as PMI-ACP, Kanban, SAFe Agilist, Advance Scrum Master, SAFe Scrum Master, DevOps, Test Driven Development, Behavior Driven Development, and Specification by Examples. Again these will not come for free. So look for either DevOps meetup in your city or meetup on product management or lean management. You should be able to earn 15 in 3 months easily. If need help then write to me.

Category ‘D’ – Through voluntary work you can earn 15 category ‘D’ SEUs. Help ME in organizing next meetup in your company and you can claim 15 for same. If that’s not possible then check with local user group community in your city and extend your help in spreading agile/scrum knowledge by working with community leader and you can claim 15 in next 3 months.

Category ‘E’ Read 3 books (my favorites) 1st – 5 dysfunctions of team, 2nd – The Phoenix Project and 3rd Scrum – A Pocket Guide and claim 15 SEUs for free in this category.

Category ‘F’ – Up to 15 SEUs may be earned through a variety of other collaborative learning activities engaged in with other Scrum practitioners. Best example attending webinar organized by us. Now every month we are facilitating 3 hours live online session on advance topic for free. Join our sessions for free to learn and earn SEUs.

So here you are in 2 months:-

Category “A” – 14 (1 full day, 2 meetup)
Category “B” – 32/40 (Either CSM+CSPO or CSM+CSD)
Category “C”– 06 (2 meetup on DevOps/Docker/Lean)
Category “E” – 15 (Reading my 3 favorite books)
Category “F” – 15 (Attend either Atlasssian hangout or join our online live session)

Total SEUs is 82-90 in next 2-3 months :)

    2. Hi Naveen, thanks for the advice.
Udemy is online course. So how can we claim this SEUs under category C? ScrumAlliance says "Activities in Category C are attended face to face". SO I am just curious how does it go into category C. I am taking lot of online courses from Lynda.com like Devops foundation and Agile Project Management techniques. Can these go into category C? I thought it should go into category F. can you please justify? again, thanks for the blog.

    3. Hi Raja, Scrum Alliance does allow online live classes under category "C" but should be live and not recorded. If recorded then category "E" also applicable. "E" is for self-learning. "F" is for live session like Webinar etc.

  13. Dear Mr. Naveen,

I have gathered 16 SEUs from CSPO course and will be going through books you have recommended to gain another 15 SEUs. Please help me for remaining 39 SEUs to be gained in the next 2 months for free. Thanking you in anticipation of an early and favorable response.

    1. Join webinar and local user group. Webinar will give you one 1 SEU for every 1 hour of webinar. KnowledgeHut having webinar every week. You can claim under category "F" . Information available here - https://www.meetup.com/agile-30-pune/

Also search meetup in Mumbai or if you are ready to travel then Agile 30 group having 4 hours session in Pune on May 20. It will give you 4 SEUs.

If you attend local meetup every alternate weekend for 1/2 day then you can get 16 SEUs in 2 months. and 8 SEUs in "F"

You have to continue same for few more months if looking for completely free else I can suggest some paid event as well as course to get remaining SEUs.

    2. Dear Mr. Naveen,

Thank you for the prompt response. Below are few queries:
      1. I have read 2 books "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" and "IT Revolution Press The Phoenix Project". Please advise if this will come under subcategory "other creative learning" of category E.
      2. I have taken 5 and 15 hours (20 hours in total) to go through the above books. Can I claim for 20 hours and they will approve 15? And how do the Scrum Alliance actually review the genuiness of the claim?
      3. These books definitely help as a manager however, I am a little confused to relate it with scrum... please help me with a little input for scrum practioner input.
      4. Can I attend non-scrum webinars to claim SEUs?
      5. I want to gather all 70 SEUs by July end, is it possible for free?
      6. When should I apply for CSP if I have to get the certification by August?

      Thanks!

    3. Hi Ashok,

      1. You can claim 20 hours but they will approve 15 only. Better to claim 20
      2. These books help in building self-organize development team and importance of autonomy. These books also talks about empiricism (Inspect, Adapt and Transparency) that's the core of Scrum
      3. You can attend non-Scrum webinar as long as it helps you to learn agile or value of team etc.
      4. As suggested, look for all free meetup/conferences etc in your city. Agile 30 meetup in Pune happening on 20th May so it will help you to get 4 SEUs
      5. Submit application by July end to get it by August

      2. how do the Scrum Alliance actually review the genuineness of the claim?
      3. How many words should be ideally good in the section "How has this activity helped you develop as a Scrum practitioner?"

I could see lot of webinars on youtube and even scrum alliance website (which were already completed days back), I am doubtful if this will fall in category E - independent learning. By any chance if it falls in category F then the date we have to enter for claiming SEU will be the date of the webinar or the date when I watched it.

First of all, thanks for an excellent blog! Very well written and actively answering Qs. My query follows. I'm already a CSP but it's due for renewal next month. I'm currently abroad on a long term assignment in Europe. While I can collect SEUs in other categories, I'm clueless on how to earn the minimum pre-requisite of SEUs in Category B. Most category B training in Europe are non-existent or extremely expensive. Please suggest

    1. Hi Nihar, one option is to take online courses on https://www.frontrowagile.com/ This is approved program from Scrum Alliance under category "B". This is the cheapest way to get many SEUs under category "B" as well as programs are really good. Especially by Samantha and Karen.

    2. Thanks for your reply Naveen. I mixed up the categories earlier. I was referring to Category A which enforces F2F meet-up e.g. a gathering, retreat or related event. I don't have any such options where I stay and unless I spend significantly in time and money to travel to another location, I don't see a workaround. Any suggestions on this please?

  31. Hi there,
For those who are interested to get CSP, you have deadline until 31 Dec 2017 for current pathway. This came up last week in Melbourne Regional Gathering. For more information visit https://www.scrumalliance.org/certifications/practitioners/csp-certification

The new path is a bit more stringent and I couldn't find much information on that except above link. Perhaps Naveen or other bloggers might have more insight.

Thank you for your blog. Very informative indeed !!
I am CSM, CSPO, SAFe 4 Agilist. This makes for 16(Cat-B) + 16 (Cat- B) + 15 (Cat-C) = 47 SEUs. In between, I did a DevOps certification training program from Edureka (7 classes for 2 hours each) followed by six regular assignments and a certification assignment. Can I include these hours and claim for SEUs in Cat- F ? If yes, how many SEUs do you suggest me to claim ? I have also added 1 SEU for each of the Scrum Alliance community Webinars. I have included 4 SEUs (presented by CTCs) in Cat- B and by others (4 SEUs) in Cat-F. In Cat - E, I have claimed 15 SEUs (reading Agile book (8 SEUs), presentation time, independent learning and so on. Any further guidance from you and I will be extremely thankful to you.
